The Antigua and Barbuda Tourism Authority is excited to announce the launch of the second edition of the Antigua and Barbuda Art Week (ABAW) Schools Art Competition.
Open to students from across the twin-island nation, the competition runs from September 17 to November 15, 2024.
Building on the success of last year’s inaugural event, this edition promises to inspire and showcase the incredible artistic talent of young students from both primary and secondary schools.
“Made in Antigua and Barbuda” – A Celebration of National Identity
This year’s competition introduces an inspiring new theme- “Made in Antigua and Barbuda”- designed to encourage young artists to reflect on the culture, lifestyle, landscapes, innovations, and people of the twin islands.
Participants will have the opportunity to express their creativity through various mediums such as painting, drawing, mixed media, and collage.
Materials like quick-drying paint, watercolor/acrylic paint, crayon pencils, wax crayons, and more are all welcome in their presentations.
Speaking on the significance of the competition, Maria Blackman, Marketing Communications Manager and a member of the Antigua and Barbuda Art Week Committee, emphasized the importance of nurturing young talent.
“The Schools Art Competition offers young artists an invaluable platform to showcase their skills and creativity. We are passionate about encouraging young talent, and this competition allows them to engage with our culture while exploring their own artistic potential,” Blackman said.
Judging, Categories, and Prizes
The competition is open to students in three age categories: 7-9 years, 10-12 years, and 13-17 years.
Each category will be judged by a panel of esteemed judges, including visual arts teachers and local artists.
The winning students will be announced at a special awards ceremony during Antigua and Barbuda Art Week 2024, where their outstanding works will be exhibited at V. C. Bird International Airport, alongside professional artists’ displays.
Mauricia Frith, the Schools Art Competition Committee Lead, expressed her excitement about the upcoming submissions: “The judges were incredibly impressed by the creativity displayed by last year’s entrants.
We look forward to seeing the growth of returning student artists and being inspired by new entries that showcase national pride and culture.”
