Get to Know the Three Level of Ontario’s Graduating License System

Graduating driver’s license system in Ontario includes three levels. It is designed with an aim to prepare safe drivers. It will be easy to navigate the license graduating system, if you get familiar with the restrictions and dissimilarities of every level.

The three levels of licensing are –

  • G1 license
  • G2 license
  • Full G license

G1 license for beginners               

G1 license is learners permit to drive in Ontario. It is earned after passing the written Ontario G1 test includes skills about traffic signs and rules. You also need to pass vision test. Candidate needs to be minimum 16 years of age to apply for G1 license. For application of G1 license you will need –

  • Canadian citizenship card
  • Passport
  • Permanent residence cared
  • Proof of residence
  • Immigration papers, if any
  • Record of landing

Make sure you practice for the G1 written test. However, there are some limitations the new G1 driver license holders will need to follow, so they can learn to drive.

  • A driver in passenger seat needs to be a full G license holder for minimum four years and have NO blood alcohol level in case there is a need to sit behind the steering wheel.
  • The G1 learner has to maintain 0 blood-alcohol level, when they are learning to drive.
  • The number of passengers must never exceed the seat belts installed in the car.
  • Never drive on High speed expressways or 400 series Highways.
  • G1 license holders are not allowed to drive between 12 am to 5 am.

Period of G1 license is for minimum 12 months after which the holder can get enrolled for the G2 road test. In case, you join accredited driving school then the time gets reduced to 8 months. Follow the rules stringently or your G1 license can get suspended.

G2 license for probation

G2 license holders will not need a full licensed driver accompanying him/her in the car. This level still has some restrictions.

  • The G1 learner has to maintain 0 blood-alcohol level, when they are learning to drive.
  • The number of passengers must never exceed the seat belts installed in the car. Drivers below 19 years must carry only a single passenger between 12 am to 5 am.
  • The single passenger has to be a family member or full license driver.

The last limitation of the G2 license gets lifted after six months and he/she is eligible to take final road test after total of twelve months.

Full G license for completion

Holding full G license means all restrictions and limitations get lifted and the candidate-driver has successfully completed the graduated licensing system. The three-level completion takes average of 2 years. It ensures that novice drivers take time to sharpen their driving skills and knowledge to become safe drivers. Full G license is an advanced road test that needs the driver to be skillful and show how smoothly the vehicle gets handled as well as he/she is familiar with the traffic flow.

Even if the driver holds a full G license in Ontario violation of traffic or road rules can have their license suspended.
